New Government Policy on Vessels' Registration in the Cyprus Register of Ships

Friday, July 10, 2009

As from the 1st of July 2009, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has decided to amend its policy on the registration of vessels in the Cyprus Register of Ships. The reason for this amendment is to improve the wording of the existing policy and at the same time to facilitate the registration of quality vessels in the Cyprus Register of Ships as well as to pursue the objective of the Department of Merchant Shipping to further develop the competitiveness of the Cyprus flag. The main changes which have been introduced by the new policy are the following:
  • The requirement for management of vessels is now satisfied if, where applicable, a vessel is operated by a shipmanagement company having its principal place of business in the EU, which is certificated for compliance with the ISM Code (instead of by a Cyprus or other EU shipmanagement company having its place of business in Cyprus, which was required by the exiting policy).
  • The age limit has been increased from 23 years to 25 years with respect to cargo vessels/ small passenger vessels/ coastal passenger vessels in order to introduce uniformity throughout the Government Policy.
  • Two new categories have been introduced, namely “Pleasure Craft” in Paragraph G and “Ships Engaged in Activities not Previously Mentioned and Non Self-Propelled Vessels” in Paragraph H, in order to overcome problems encountered during the implementation of the existing Government Policy.
  • Certain minor amendments/ improvements to the existing Government Policy have also been introduced.
